Project Details

ICS was engaged to remediate a small area of lead-impacted soil at a recently-acquired agricultural property. After the initial excavation, confirmation samples revealed that lead-levels in the surrounding area were even higher than the levels in the soil initially targeted for removal. Upon further investigation, our client learned that the property had a widespread lead contamination problem that would have cost millions of dollars to remediate using traditional “dig and haul” methods.

ICS’ construction team, lead by a former environmental consultant along with scientists and engineers, devised a system to drastically reduce the cost of remediation. They had observed that the soil was predominately cobbles, so they engineered a system to separate rock from soil, remove the lead-dust and stockpile the cobble, saving millions of dollars in transport and disposal costs.

ICS excavated, screened, and washed over 40,000 tons of RCRA and Non-RCRA lead impacted soil and cobble throughout the 2 acre site. The soil and cobble were stockpiled in a central location, then screened and washed through a plant designed and operated by ICS. Project was performed in accordance with specification under strict oversight by various regulatory agencies.

Field Tasks

  • Performed excavation, screening, segregation, transportation, and disposal of over 20,000 tons of various levels of lead impacted soil
  • Excavated, transported (within the site) and stockpiled over 40,000 tons of lead impacted soil and cobble for processing
  • Designed, procured, installed and operated soil screening and cobble washing plant for separation of soil and decontamination of impacted cobble
  • Designed, procured, installed, and operated two water filtration/recycling systems for 5/8 to 3-inch mechanical decontamination and greater than 3-inch to 3 foot diameter manual decontamination
  • Managed segregation, manifesting, transportation, and disposal of processed Non-RCRA Hazardous, RCRA direct, and RCRA requiring treatment soil
  • Recycled all decontaminated cobble on site. Small cobble was utilized for backfill to minimize the amount of import needed and the large cobble was utilized for decorative on-site road barriers
